Nana WOLKE was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1994. She took the exchange program at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig (class of Prof. Michael Riedel) in 2017-2018, and received her BFA with honours from the Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana in 2018. In 2021, she received the MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London. She currently lives and works in London, UK.
With theatrical props and dramatic lighting, Wolke restages both personal and fictional short scenes, creating glimpses that can no longer be identified as either due to the seduction of cultural images and unreliability of one’s own memory. Painting allows her to test the vantage point at which images are recalled and recorded, and in turn, realities recreated. Unlike the film stills that often highlight the tension on stage, the private and trivial perspectives in her paintings reveal the experience out of the spotlight. At the same time, the vibrant and striking colours lead the viewer to a new narrative of drama which perhaps foreshadows the upcoming climax.
